Built-up roof systems have been used in the United States for over 100 years and offer protection for roofs from coast to coast. A built-up system (BUR) consists of multiple layers of varying roofing materials that combine to make one roof system. Often the bottom layer is mechanically fastened or hot-mopped to the roof decking or insulation.
The top layer of a BUR system is covered with gravel, granules or a coating that protects the lower layers from damage and increases the longevity of the roof system.
Repairing Built-Up Roofs:
In most cases a BUR roof system can be repaired when it fails in one or two areas. The process is to remove the granules or gravel from the leaking area to expose the layers underneath. Once exposed, we can find a solution to repair, then replace the gravel to cover the repaired area and protect it from future damage.
Difficult to Diagnose:
Finding the actual leak on BUR roofs can be difficult and should only be left to professionals who have dealt with these systems in the past. Water will travel laterally along the decking before it finds a way into a building, and this can be deceiving when trying to find the actual leaking area.
